Imagine being told that you have to volunteer before you can graduate highschool.Although Indiana itself does not have this requirement to graduate, our school does. Some students aren’t very happy about this while others don’t mind at all.Most people think kids aren’t very helpful at all due to stereotypes. But students can make a very big difference by helping out food banks, picking up trash, helping the elderly,etc. And not only does this help the community, it can also help the students. How? Well it can help them build real life useful skills like teamwork,leadership,responsibility,management, and communication skills. That said, even though there are many good benefits from community service, some students may feel forced to and feel like volunteering isn’t really volunteering if it’s required. It can also take away free time when students need to do things like homework, sports, clubs, family time etc. Students who struggle academically may feel like it adds on to the stress they already have from classes, social interactions, and family issues. Overall, requiring community service hours to graduate has both ups and downs. In the end it can be a good experience but whether it should be required for graduation depends on how the requirements are designed and how much flexibility students have.
